The Great Kemeri Bog Visitor Center is located in the expansive Kemeri Bog, an area known for its rich ecology and diverse landscapes. Serving as a gateway for visitors, the center bridges the gap between urban life and the serene natural world. The design is based on the idea that connecting with nature is a gradual process that starts from built environments and transitions into open spaces. This concept shapes the movement of visitors, guiding them from the entry road through the parking area and onward to the bogs.

Site Organization

The visitor center features a range of geometric forms that promote a clear sense of movement. These shapes are thoughtfully designed to blend with the landscape and the walkway leading to the boardwalk. The use of gentle curves allows for smooth movement, helping visitors easily navigate their way from the parking area located on the east side toward the natural attractions of the bog.

Architectural Narrative

As visitors move through the site, they will find various pavilions that serve different functions. These structures enhance the overall experience by providing spaces for various activities. The combination of paved pathways and landscaped areas introduces different types of vegetation, fostering a strong connection between human interactions and the surrounding environment. The careful arrangement of spaces, along with a narrow structure framed by trees, emphasizes the directional flow created by the design.

Aerial Perspective

From a bird's-eye view, the roofline of the center resembles a break in the forest, highlighting the relationship between built structures and the natural surroundings. This design element adds visual interest while also enhancing the experience of movement throughout the landscape.

Functional Efficiency

The parking area has been designed for effective use of space to accommodate visitor traffic comfortably. This planning ensures an easy transition from vehicles to the natural landscape, linking urban infrastructure with the exploration of the unique environment found in the Great Kemeri Bog.

As visitors approach the center, the carefully shaped entryway encourages them to engage with the lush landscape, inviting them to discover the rich features of the bog even before they reach the boardwalk.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
