Dock House is located in a temperate oceanic climate, famous for its calm waters and four distinct seasons. The design focuses on creating a close relationship between living spaces and the coastal setting. It is a semi-floating structure that highlights sustainability and flexibility. The layout is organized around two connected pavilions, allowing for both communal and private areas.

Architectural Layout

The design features two pavilions that are linked by a space called the "Water Yard." This area serves as a bridge between public and private functions. In the first pavilion, areas for cooking, sharing, and working come together to encourage social interactions. The second pavilion is dedicated to sleeping, storage, and bathing, providing the necessary privacy for its occupants while maintaining a clear functional separation.

Functional Design Strategies

Dock House uses a thoughtful approach to space by organizing horizontal and vertical planes that do not intersect. This strategy creates visual frames that capture views of the surrounding landscape, enhancing the experience of the interior. Careful attention is given to enclosures, which protect residents from external elements and reduce direct sunlight, ensuring comfort in various weather conditions.

Sustainability Features

Sustainability plays a vital role in the design. Dock House includes systems that harness the energy of natural marine currents for electricity. It utilizes both a horizontal propeller and a vertical float system to generate power. Additionally, a dry toilet is part of the design to lower waste production, and a desalination system processes non-potable water, reducing reliance on outside resources.

Materiality and Construction

The construction includes phenolic plywood flooring and Cor-Ten steel panels. These materials provide strength and contribute to the overall aesthetic of the design. Glass wool insulation helps to maintain a stable temperature within the house, despite high levels of humidity outside. This careful selection of materials enhances both functionality and visual appeal throughout the project.

Natural ventilation is achieved through the large Water Yard, which promotes air circulation within the spaces. This design choice supports a constant renewal of air, improving indoor comfort. Overall, Dock House reflects a strong commitment to sustainability and adaptability, presenting a practical and thoughtful solution for living in a coastal environment.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
