Floating Yoga Shala with Gabion Structure Overlooking Vale de Moses

Project in-detail

Perched at the edge of a cliff, the design incorporates a floating yoga shala framed by a gabion structure, offering panoramic views of Vale de Moses while promoting mindfulness and connection to nature.
5 key facts about this project
01
Perched at the edge of a cliff, the design offers unobstructed views of the surrounding valley.
02
The yoga shala features a floating structure that enhances the sense of lightness and connection to nature.
03
Gabion walls are used to blend the building into the environment while providing stability and aesthetic appeal.
04
An open-air corridor connects various spaces, promoting movement and interaction with the natural landscape.
05
Rainwater collection systems are integrated into the design to support sustainable water management.

The design is situated at the edge of a cliff, offering an expansive view of Vale de Moses. It focuses on creating a space dedicated to yoga practice and meditation. The overall concept emphasizes a connection between the built environment and the natural landscape, encouraging users to engage with their surroundings. The yoga shala is designed to appear as though it floats above the valley, providing inspiring views that serve as a backdrop for contemplation and self-discovery. Auxiliary spaces are arranged in an L-shaped layout behind the shala to support various functions while maintaining visual coherence.

Spatial Organization

The yoga shala acts as the core of the design, with an open-air corridor that promotes movement between areas. This corridor enhances the experience by allowing users to transition through the landscape, sharpening their focus and awareness leading into yoga practice. The arrangement of these spaces helps create an atmosphere conducive to calmness and reflection, supporting personal exploration.

Materiality and Connection to Nature

Natural materials like wood and gabions have been incorporated to foster a close relationship between the structure and the site. These choices not only provide stability but also bring a sense of warmth and earthiness. The combination of these elements enhances the experience of the retreat, reinforcing the commitment to sustainability and the environment.

Sustainability Strategies

Environmental sustainability is a key concern in the design. Rainwater management systems have been included to efficiently gather and store water, while energy needs are addressed through the use of solar panels. The estimated energy consumption is around 500 kWh per month. Heating strategies consist of thermal insulation, geothermal loops, and pellet stoves to ensure comfort throughout the year.

Different garden typologies have been thoughtfully integrated into the landscape to promote tranquility. The main garden includes a floating meditation platform that invites users to connect with their surroundings. A smaller garden at the entrance prepares practitioners for relaxation. In addition, a zen garden at the heart of the design emphasizes simplicity, encouraging peaceful reflection. These elements create spaces for thought and contemplation, enriching the overall experience of the retreat.
