The Vale de Moses Yoga Retreat offers a peaceful setting in Serra da Estrela Natural Park, near Coimbra, Portugal. The design focuses on wellness, with spaces dedicated to meditation, yoga, and moments of quiet reflection. The layout harmonizes with the surrounding landscape, creating a place where people can connect with nature while finding tranquility.

Design Concept

The retreat features sleeping pods that serve as individual sanctuaries. Inspired by the shape of a gastropod shell, these pods create a natural flow from shared areas to private spaces. Each arrangement allows visitors to experience intimacy and calm, key elements for a restorative environment. This layout not only meets personal needs but also encourages a sense of community, adapting to different preferences through various configurations.

Materiality and Structure

Natural materials are integral to the design, strengthening the connection to the region. The sleeping pods are elevated on wooden legs, giving them a floating appearance. This approach minimizes impact on the ground below, allowing for plant life to flourish. The use of wood for structural elements, alongside cork for the interior, provides warmth and comfort, enhancing the serene atmosphere that is crucial for relaxation and mindfulness.

Transitional Spaces

Visitors engage in a ritual upon entering the sleeping pods, which includes washing their hands and stepping on massaging pebbles. This process helps clear the mind, allowing for a renewed focus on wellness. The narrow balcony acts as a bridge between the pods and the outside world. It offers a sense of openness while maintaining privacy, allowing guests to enjoy the surroundings comfortably.

Meditation Area

A standout feature of the retreat is the floating island of meditation, an elevated space designed for deep thought and relaxation. The open ceiling creates a strong connection with nature, inviting light and air into the area. This thoughtfully designed space reinforces the calming experience of the retreat, providing a unique atmosphere for those seeking inner peace and reflection.
