A floating opaque stone serves as a focal point for burial urns, surrounded by vertical glass columns that invite nature into a reflective space designed for remembrance within the Forest Cemetery.
5 key facts about this project
01
Recycled glass columns mimic a temple design, allowing natural light and sound to enter the space.
02
The central opaque stone appears to float, creating a unique focal point for reflection.
03
Each niche for burial urns is designed for uniformity, enhancing communal remembrance.
04
The structure avoids mortar, using tension cables to enhance sustainability in construction.
05
Local stone materials are repurposed to integrate the columbarium within its natural setting.

The columbarium for the Forest Cemetery in Riga offers a thoughtful approach to the themes of memory and nature in a modern setting. Located at the end of the cemetery's north-south axis, the structure is surrounded by trees and graves, creating a calm environment for reflection and remembrance. The design concept focuses on how built forms interact with their natural surroundings, enhancing the experience for visitors who come to honor their memories.

Façade and Structure

Constructed with glass columns arranged in a colonnade, the columbarium allows natural light and sound to fill its interior. This design fosters a connection between people and nature, creating a peaceful space for contemplation. The transparency of the glass contributes to an open atmosphere, enabling visitors to feel a part of the environment as they engage in their personal reflections.

Central Element

A unique feature of the columbarium is the central opaque stone that appears to float above the ground. This design element contrasts with the surrounding glass, providing a focal point for visitors' memories. Four stone components are positioned around this central feature to hold burial urns in identical niches. These elements include surfaces for candles and flowers, encouraging visitors to connect with their loved ones in a meaningful way.

Material and Sustainability

The design prioritizes sustainability by avoiding the use of mortar. Instead, tension cables are employed to compress glass bricks, maintaining the structure's safety while promoting eco-friendly building practices. Recycled glass is chosen as a primary material, which reflects a commitment to reducing environmental impact. Plans to incorporate locally sourced stone materials demonstrate an awareness of the ecological footprint, enriching the design's connection to the region.

Natural Integration

The columbarium effectively responds to its setting, providing a space that meets the needs of a memorial while respecting the surrounding landscape. The design fosters an inviting atmosphere for reflection, allowing visitors to engage deeply with their memories. Details such as the way light interacts with the glass columns enhance the space’s quiet character, offering a retreat for personal contemplation amidst the beauty of the Forest Cemetery.
