The Floating Sampler is a microhome and floating laboratory located in the Gulf of Mexico, an area known for its environmental challenges following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The design serves a dual purpose: it offers a comfortable living space for marine biologists while also providing the necessary facilities for ongoing ecological research. The overall concept emphasizes the need for close proximity to the water, making it easier to conduct important studies in marine ecosystems.

Functional Arrangement
- The layout features distinct areas for living and working, centered around an outdoor courtyard. This courtyard allows for activities such as diving and serves as a space for relaxation. The laboratory includes essential equipment, specifically three small oil refinery tanks and one water tank, which are vital for analyzing oil pollution and assessing water quality. The arrangement promotes a balanced lifestyle for its occupants, supporting both their professional and personal needs.

Mobility and Adaptability
- The design allows the Floating Sampler to navigate the waters of the Gulf. This mobility is crucial for marine biologists, as it enables them to collect data from various locations. Being able to relocate the laboratory means that researchers can study different marine environments, adapting to the dynamics of their surroundings. This flexibility enhances the practicality of the design, ensuring that it meets the demands of field research.

Sustainability Features
- The structure includes several sustainable elements that reflect a commitment to environmental responsibility. Solar panels are strategically positioned to capture sunlight throughout the day. A rain collection roof enables the gathering of rainwater, which can be stored in the water tank. These features not only reduce the ecological footprint of the building but also contribute to its efficiency and self-sufficiency.

Structural Elements
- Buoyancy is achieved through floating pontoons that are securely attached to the deck, providing stability while situated on the water. Rigid heat insulation foam is used in the deck, helping to maintain a comfortable interior temperature by minimizing heat loss. This attention to structural detail supports the overall functionality of the Floating Sampler while ensuring it is resilient in a marine environment.

The living area features small windows that maintain privacy while offering glimpses of the surroundings. This thoughtful design element allows occupants to feel connected to the marine landscape while providing a personal retreat for rest and recharge.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
