The project is located in the Mývatn region, famous for its unique landscapes and volcanic features. Designed to serve multiple functions, the building includes a reception area, restaurant, greenhouse, and guest accommodations. The concept draws inspiration from the theme of fire and ice, creating a strong connection between nature and the architecture.

Design Concept

The design reflects the relationship between the building and its surrounding environment. It organizes spaces in a way that encourages movement and interaction among visitors. Each section of the facility is placed to highlight the natural beauty of the area, ensuring the architecture complements rather than competes with the landscape.

Functional Spaces

Entering the building, visitors find a reception area that connects to a small shop where they can gather information and supplies. This leads to a two-level restaurant that serves as a central social space for dining and gathering. As part of the layout, guest accommodations are located nearby, enhancing convenience for those wishing to stay longer and explore the region.

A key element of the design is the greenhouse, which appears to float above the ground. This space not only serves a practical function by growing local produce but also creates an inviting environment. Inside, the greenhouse is divided into sections for different types of plants, including vegetables and fruit trees. A catwalk allows visitors to walk above the plants and engage with the growing process directly.

Materiality and Integration

The building's exterior consists of two layers of concrete walls designed to prevent wear and tear while reducing maintenance. Local concrete and stone are used for the outermost layer, helping the structure blend into the landscape. This choice reinforces the connection to the Mývatn environment and aligns with the overall sustainability goals of the design.

The rooftop area provides expansive views of the surrounding volcanic landscape. This space invites visitors to relax and enjoy their surroundings, connecting them to the essence of the Mývatn region. It captures the landscape's character and creates a moment for reflection and appreciation of the natural beauty nearby.
