5 key facts about this project
The Flamingo Visitor Center at Al Wathba Wetland Reserve in Abu Dhabi serves as a central point for visitors to observe and learn about the rich ecosystems where desert meets wetland. The design embodies the idea of a "solidified breeze," characterized by flowing forms that connect with the natural environment. It emphasizes interaction with the landscape while ensuring that visitors have an immersive experience.
Design Integration
The building is strategically located on the southern side of the reserve. The entrance and parking area are positioned to the north, allowing for a clear flow of visitors while preserving the natural habitat. Its two-story layout minimizes the building’s footprint on the sensitive environment, enabling visitors to take full advantage of the remarkable views of the area's flamingo populations.
Architectural Form
Cantilevered layers create the impression that the structure floats above the surrounding desert. This design choice contributes to a light and airy feeling. Expansive glass panels facilitate unobstructed views, drawing visitors’ eyes toward the wetlands and integrating the building with its landscape.
Interior Functionality
Inside, the ground floor efficiently arranges spaces for an information center, reception, offices, a gift shop, and a training room. The second level features a café and an area to display specimens, providing educational opportunities for guests. The flow between these areas encourages visitors to engage with the space comfortably.
Lighting and Materiality
The lighting within the building is designed to provide uniform illumination that adapts to the varied heights and surfaces of the interiors. White concrete serves as the main material, providing durability while reflecting the soft tones of the surrounding environment. This choice supports the organic feel of the architecture.
The building’s undulating roof culminates in an open terrace, offering a place for visitors to observe the flamingos and appreciate the wetland's beauty. This feature echoes the overall design intention of connecting people with nature in a thoughtful and engaging manner.
