5 key facts about this project
The architectural project SEED is located in a picturesque area of Iceland, combining sustainable farming practices with community interaction. The design features a cylindrical shape that represents growth and connects the idea of nourishment with personal and communal development. With multiple functions including a greenhouse, dining facilities, and educational spaces, it allows visitors to explore modern agriculture while enjoying casual dining experiences.
Design Concept
The central idea of the design is that nourishment and transformation are linked. The saying, “Dreams are the seeds of change,” captures this philosophy. The building's vertical form rises from the ground to maximize sunlight, which is essential for the hydroponic farm on the upper level. This height not only optimizes plant growth but also encourages direct engagement with the farming processes involved.
Ground Floor Functionality
The ground floor features a greenhouse along with technical rooms that support hydroponic systems. The layout is arranged to create specific environments for various crops such as fruits, vegetables, and berries. Each type of plant requires its unique conditions, and the design addresses that need. Adjacent to the farm, a demonstration area allows visitors to engage with hydroponics, enhancing their understanding of sustainable agriculture practices.
Community and Culinary Space
On the first floor, an open layout promotes interaction among community members. This level is designed for social activities, including yoga classes, and includes a café offering products grown on-site. It also features a retail area for local goods. This combination of spaces encourages community engagement while highlighting local agriculture.
Dining Experience
The restaurant on the second floor is designed with an open kitchen, allowing diners to watch the cooking process. This transparency builds a strong connection between the hydroponic farm and the meals served. Tasting zones and a bar enrich the diner’s experience and provide views of the surrounding landscape. These elements create a setting where guests can appreciate not just their food, but also the source from which it comes.
The immersive dining room on the third floor features a unique floating ceiling inspired by the Northern Lights. This design detail enhances the atmosphere significantly. Guests can enjoy their meals while taking in panoramic views of the Icelandic landscape, creating a link between the indoor experience and the natural world outside.
