The observation tower utilizes a floating boardwalk design and an oval geometric form to create accessible vantage points for birdwatching, seamlessly integrating with its wetland environment.
5 key facts about this project
01
The tower features a circular pathway that allows for unobstructed access to all observation levels.
02
Composed of four storeys, each with 100 square meters, the design maximizes space while maintaining accessibility.
03
The modular boardwalk is designed to adapt to seasonal flooding, ensuring constant access to observation points.
04
Constructed with composite wood, the boardwalk enhances stability while respecting the ecological context.
05
Strategically positioned to align with wetland habitats, the tower promotes biodiversity and wildlife observation.

The Abu Dhabi Bird Observation Tower is designed to enhance the experience of observing local wildlife, specifically flamingos. Located in a region known for its rich variety of birds, the tower allows visitors to connect with nature while promoting environmental awareness. Its design concept emphasizes movement and fluidity, expressed through a simple oval-shaped form that mirrors the graceful posture of flamingos.

Circular Pathway

The layout of the tower features a circular pathway that facilitates smooth movement from ground level to an observation height of 12 meters. This design ensures easy access for all visitors, including those with mobility challenges. The configuration helps create a natural flow between different levels, making it easier for people to experience the space without obstacles.

Structural Composition

The tower consists of four levels, each covering an area of 100 square meters, adhering to a maximum total floor area of 400 square meters. Low-angle ramps on each level enhance accessibility, allowing visitors to navigate comfortably. The focus on functional design supports the goal of encouraging a deeper connection between visitors and the surrounding wildlife, making the observation spaces welcoming for everyone.

Boardwalk Design

A noteworthy aspect of the project is the modular boardwalk, designed to adapt to various terrains and changing environmental conditions. The boardwalk includes four barrels underneath, which allow it to float during seasonal flooding. This feature ensures that observation points remain accessible throughout the year. Composite wood floor planks are used for the boardwalk, contributing to its stability while considering the natural habitat.

Site Selection

The choice of location is vital for maximizing bird observation opportunities. Research guided the selection of a site rich in water bodies and wetland plants, essential for attracting diverse bird species. The project is located to the south of the site, where 60% of these ideal conditions are found. This strategic placement allows the tower to harmonize with its natural surroundings, enhancing its function as a space for wildlife observation.

The observation deck extends outward, inviting visitors to linger and take in the landscape around them. It offers a sense of immersion in the lively ecosystem, encouraging people to engage with the environment and appreciate the beauty of the avian life nearby.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
