The project is located in a setting that highlights the cultural heritage of Latvia. Inspired by the symbol of Austra's Tree, the design reflects a deep connection to themes of unity, which bridge the past, present, and future. It aims to create a peaceful environment that serves as both a retreat and a space for community interaction. The carefully planned layout of the cabins promotes this dual function, allowing users to find solace while also engaging with one another.

Symbolic Integration

The design beautifully incorporates Latvian cultural symbols through its representation of Austra's Tree. The cabins are shaped with sharp elements and divided into two sections, a direct reference to the nearby Totem. This design decision fosters visual coherence and strengthens the narrative that is deeply rooted in local traditions. Each building is crafted to contribute to a story about cultural identity and place, ensuring that the architecture resonates with its surroundings.

Sustainability and Materiality

A strong focus on environmental sustainability guides the selection of materials. Fired spruce wood is prominently used in the building’s elevation, reflecting an awareness of ecological concerns, particularly in relation to local biodiversity. This material choice balances aesthetic appeal with a commitment to sustainability. The decision to use such wood aligns the project with ecological principles and creates a connection to the natural environment surrounding it.

Atmosphere and Color Palette

The chosen palette of sage and earth tones adds to the tranquility of the environment. These calming colors evoke feelings of comfort and safety, enhancing the experience for visitors. The use of these hues not only supports the project’s serene atmosphere but also connects it visually to the natural landscape. The colors play a significant role in creating an inviting space where people can relax and reflect.

The arrangement of cabins alongside communal areas encourages social interactions among users. The clarity and simplicity in the building’s forms emphasize a modern aesthetic while respecting traditional influences. Every element comes together to promote a harmonious experience that encourages a sense of belonging, fostering a connection to the land and to each other.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
