Exploring Natural Landscapes Within Diverse Biomes

Project in-detail

Incorporating diverse biomes with distinct environmental challenges, the design creates an engaging virtual playground that emphasizes user interaction and exploration.
5 key facts about this project
01
Altera features immersive biomes with unique emotional experiences.
02
The WHITEOUT biome involves challenging blizzards and navigation.
03
ZERGO biome users interact in zero-gravity conditions.
04
CRYO-CORE serves as a communal virtual gathering space.
05
XERIC biome challenges players with energy loss risks.

Altera is an immersive virtual environment defined by a variety of biomes. Each biome features unique landscapes and experiences that invite users to explore and engage. Set in a digital realm, it merges the concepts of gameplay and architecture, creating an interactive space where imagination thrives. This design emphasizes user involvement and adaptability, encouraging individuals to shape their journey through the environment.

INTERACTIVE BIOMES

Altera includes multiple biomes, each crafted to provide a different emotional and sensory experience. The WHITEOUT biome is marked by blizzards that disrupt communication, adding a layer of complexity as players navigate through challenging conditions. This biome requires strategic thinking and quick decisions. In contrast, the ZERGO biome operates in zero gravity, presenting a different set of challenges that alter how users interact with the space.

USER ENGAGEMENT

Dynamic interaction is central to the user experience. The CRYO-CORE acts as a communal virtual lobby, where users can gather and share experiences. The H20 and AQUEO environments challenge users to move through mist while collecting items and facing obstacles from swamp creatures. Engagement here promotes a sense of ownership over the journey.

CHALLENGES AND REWARDS

Altera incorporates various challenges that drive personal growth. In the XERIC biome, players contend with the risk of losing virtual energy, which demands careful navigation to uncover hidden rewards. The LITHOS biome presents radioactive camouflaged animals that require parkour skills to overcome. Such challenges not only enhance game difficulty but also reward persistence and adaptability.

The design of Altera utilizes advanced digital technologies to create these varied environments. Transitions between different biomes invite exploration, and the careful arrangement of visual elements encourages users to immerse themselves fully. The interplay of light and shadow across various landscapes adds complexity, enriching the experience within this engaging virtual world.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
