5 key facts about this project
01
A spiral circulation path creates a continuous journey through light and darkness.
02
The tower serves as a geological vantage point with sweeping views of the landscape.
03
Concrete materials establish a tactile connection to the rugged Icelandic terrain.
04
Visitors engage in an experiential exploration of perception and time.
05
The design utilizes the ambivalence of space to reflect local folklore themes.

The design is set in the diverse landscapes of Iceland, in an area where volcanic zones meet glacial formations. It takes the form of a tower that explores the relationship between light and darkness. This interplay guides visitors on a sensory journey, encouraging them to reflect on their surroundings and the passage of time. The concept, called the "Illusion of Sequence," plays with these contrasting elements to create an engaging experience.

Design Concept

The core idea is to show how light and darkness affect the way people see and understand their environment. The tower's layout allows visitors to move through spaces that shift from bright to dark. As they navigate, they engage with the landscape, deepening their connection to it. This path not only leads them upward but also invites introspection as they experience these transitions.

Spatial Dynamics

The tower is designed with a spiral circulation that promotes a continuous flow for movement. Visitors ascend from darker areas into brighter ones, which reflects their quest for light. This arrangement offers a dynamic relationship between the user and the environment. The design enhances the visual experience, providing various viewpoints of the stunning Icelandic geography surrounding the structure.

Material Considerations

A new concrete canvas has been integrated into the design. This material choice connects the structure to the rugged landscape, giving it a physical link to its setting. Concrete creates a distinct form and texture for the tower. It both grounds the architecture in context and engages the senses as visitors interact with the space.

Landscape Integration

The tower's location allows it to serve as a point of natural exploration and everyday use. By placing the structure in relation to the landscape, the design emphasizes the connection between people and their environment. Visitors are encouraged to experience the space in a way that fosters a better understanding of its geographical context.

As they move upward through the tower, individuals discover a thoughtful arrangement of light and shadow that leads to open viewpoints. These vistas provide expansive views of the Icelandic landscape. The design facilitates movement while also allowing for reflection and a deeper appreciation of the area’s dynamic geography.
