The project at Karymsky Volcano offers an examination of balance and reflection within a unique volcanic environment. Designed to symbolize the origins of life, the structure takes on the form of a drop of water, representing the foundation of civilization. It serves various functions, including exhibition and performance spaces. This architecture connects human existence with natural events, inviting visitors to explore its deeper meanings.

Conceptual Framework

Central to the design is the theme of balance, linking physical shape with philosophical ideas. The slender form of the building is supported by a central fulcrum, similar to a seesaw, which exemplifies equilibrium. This approach reflects ancient Chinese philosophy, emphasizing the idea of opposites existing together, like yin and yang. The structure encourages a rethinking of society's current focus on excess, promoting the value of harmony and stability instead.

Spatial Organization

A circular corridor surrounds the exterior, engaging visitors with the stunning landscape. This element creates a sense of enclosure while simultaneously inviting exploration. The convex mirror of the sphere within the corridor serves to highlight humanity's small scale in relation to the vast universe. The design challenges visitors to consider their place within nature, prompting reflection on their surroundings.

Interior Experience

Upon entering, visitors find themselves in a circular exhibition hall that acts as a gathering space. The design includes small openings in the roof, allowing light to pour in and create a warm atmosphere. This feature enhances the interior and gives it a quality reminiscent of pearls. The spatial qualities within the hall encourage moments of contemplation and interaction, enriching the overall experience for visitors.

Design Detail

The filtering light within the exhibition hall creates a dynamic environment that changes throughout the day. Light and shadow play off surfaces, making the space feel alive as time passes. This interaction emphasizes the connection between human achievements and the natural world, creating a thoughtful dialogue that resonates with the ongoing narrative of human civilization.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
