Exploring Cave-Like Niches In A Fluid Form Guest House

Project in-detail

Cave-like niches and fluid forms create a unique interplay of light and space in a guest house designed for immersive experience within the Icelandic highlands.
5 key facts about this project
01
Cave-like niches create unique gathering spaces within the structure.
02
Designed to respond effectively to the prevailing northeast winds.
03
Fluid forms mirror the surrounding Icelandic landscape aesthetics.
04
The layout encourages unrestricted movement and exploration.
05
User experience is prioritized through adaptable communal areas.

The guest house, located in the unique landscape of the Icelandic highlands, combines the natural world with built form. It serves as a thermal retreat for visitors seeking to disconnect from urban life, promoting an immersive experience with nature. The building’s design emphasizes an interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces, encouraging occupants to feel at home in the surrounding environment.

Spatial Arrangement

At the heart of the guest house is the idea of movement and exploration. The layout includes voids that allow people to wander freely throughout the structure. This design encourages a more casual experience compared to typical architectural designs that often guide movement in a strict manner. By removing hierarchical divisions among spaces, the guest house fosters a sense of community and provides flexibility for diverse activities.

Response to Climate

The design takes into account the influential climate of the region, particularly the winds that come from the northeast. By incorporating solid corners, the structure channels airflow in a way that reduces wind impact, helping to maintain comfort for guests. This detail reflects an understanding of environmental factors, enhancing both the function and experience of the building.

Integration with Landscape

Specific materials chosen for the project are not detailed, yet the overall design suggests the use of elements that connect well with the Icelandic surroundings. The intent is to create a building that blends with its environment and feels natural in its setting. The flowing forms of the guest house invite light and shadow to play across its surfaces, reinforcing its connection to the landscape.

The design culminates in a network of spaces and pathways that encourage movement and exploration. Visitors are invited to engage with both the interior and the breathtaking surroundings, allowing for a deep connection with the highlands. Each corner of the guest house reveals yet another perspective of this enchanting landscape, providing moments of quiet reflection and enjoyment.
