The Sense House is located in the Nossa Senhora das Graças neighborhood of Sete Lagoas, Brazil. It promotes a design that centers around sensory experience. The residence caters especially to individuals with visual impairments, aiming for deeper interaction with the environment. By emphasizing tactile, auditory, and olfactory aspects, it moves beyond the typical visual focus often found in architecture, enhancing the overall livability and connection to nature.

Environmental Integration

At the heart of the design is a "sensorial garden" that invites residents to engage with the natural elements surrounding them. Carefully designed paths lead users through spaces meant for both social interaction and personal contemplation. This garden is more than just a visual feature; it plays a crucial role in how residents experience their home and encourages a connection with nature.

Climate Adaptation

Given the tropical climate of the region, the Sense House employs a cross-ventilation system to promote natural airflow and maintain a comfortable indoor environment. Large glass frames facing the south allow for indirect light, which helps regulate temperature. This strategy ensures that the inside remains a pleasant space, adapting well to the changing conditions outside.

Universal Design Principles

The layout follows universal design guidelines, incorporating fixed furniture solutions that meet the varied needs of users. This attention to accessibility enhances comfort and ease of movement throughout the house. Each element is included with careful consideration, blending functionality with visual appeal and creating a practical living environment.

Material Considerations

The structure makes use of reforested eucalyptus wood, chosen for its sustainability and strength. The use of rammed earth for fencing aligns with traditional building methods and supports energy efficiency. These materials contribute not only to the environmental responsibility of the design but also provide a range of textures that enhance the sensory experience of the home.

The proximity of the Sangradouro do Tropeiro Stream adds a calming soundscape that enriches the garden's atmosphere. Residents can engage with the gentle sounds of flowing water and the natural scents from various plants. This interplay transforms the space into a multisensory experience, deepening the connection between the inhabitants and their environment.
