The Lanterns project emerges as a contemporary response to the changing landscape of urban nightlife in Berlin, particularly during the constraints of the Covid-19 pandemic. These temporary structures are designed to encourage social interaction while reflecting the spirit of the city's techno culture. With modular and movable units, the design allows for flexibility in public spaces, facilitating engagement in a safe and adaptable environment.

Concept and Functionality

The core idea centers around creating spaces that balance community connection and individual enjoyment. Each lantern acts as a designated area for music enthusiasts, blending personal experiences with social gatherings. Inspired by the Love Parade, the installation aims to broaden the city’s techno heritage by establishing new meeting points where users can enjoy music and socialize within a structured yet open setting.

Materiality and Structure

The lanterns feature a rough metal structure that enhances durability and portability. This material choice allows the units to adapt to various public settings without making permanent changes to the environment. Each lantern is covered in an ETFE membrane, which is known for its excellent acoustic properties and resistance to weather. This lightweight and transparent cladding helps diffuse light, creating an inviting atmosphere.

Technology and Social Interaction

The project also highlights the integration of technology to improve the user experience. Each lantern comes equipped with screens and webcams, enabling people to connect with friends and fellow users. This feature encourages social interaction, allowing individuals to share experiences despite physical distance. The design fosters a sense of community, blending personal and collective enjoyment.

Safety and Adaptability

Safety is a critical consideration in the design of the lanterns, as they can be sanitized between each use. This ensures compliance with health guidelines while promoting responsible social environments. By focusing on both personal enjoyment and collective celebration, the project addresses the needs of contemporary urban nightlife.

The design of each lantern creates a welcoming space, brought to life by light and sound. This immersive environment resonates with the lively energy of Berlin’s nightlife, inviting users to engage and celebrate.
