Eternal Flame and Steel Wall in a Reflective Garden

Project in-detail

The interplay of an eternal flame and a steel wall creates a reflective garden that invites contemplation on memory and life cycles, serving as a communal space for remembrance and rejuvenation.
5 key facts about this project
01
Eternal flame serves as a central focal point for reflection and ceremony.
02
Steel wall defines a clear boundary while integrating visually with the landscape.
03
Virgil telescope connects different temporal and spatial dimensions within the garden.
04
Sunken well symbolizes the source of life, enhancing the narrative of the space.
05
Outdoor chapel designed as a natural amphitheater for communal gatherings.

The Rituals of Mnemosyne is a design project that focuses on the themes of memory and reflection within a unique environment. Set in a cosmological garden, the design contrasts elements of light and dark, permanence and transience. Visitors are led through a carefully composed journey that mirrors cycles of life and death in a meaningful way.

Conceptual Framework

At the heart of the design is the concept of a cosmological garden, which integrates both natural and structured elements. This arrangement emphasizes the exploration of memory through a series of spaces that invite contemplation. The Virgil telescope acts as a key feature, linking different times and spaces while enhancing the narrative experience for visitors.

Architectural Elements

Fragmentation and unity play significant roles in the project, drawing inspiration from the nearby Forest Cemetery. The entry is designed as a stage, featuring a steel wall that runs along a north-south axis, contrasting with diagonally arranged structures that populate the site. A hand-washing basin near the entrance signifies the movement from the everyday to the sacred, setting a reflective tone for what follows.

Symbolic Features

A central element is the eternal flame, emanating from a monolithic block. This flame serves as a focal point for gatherings, acting as both a ceremonial feature and a hearth for communal reflection. Surrounding this flame is a grove, which serves as a backdrop for life and death cycles. Here, an outdoor chapel and a sunken well symbolize life’s source, enriching the narrative within the space.

Spatial Dynamics

The design introduces various levels, where a spiraling descent takes visitors into deeper spaces that evoke thoughts of mortality. This journey through the subterranean culminates in an ascent, connecting exploration with a feeling of enlightenment. Steel structures complement the overall design, bringing a sense of solidity and continuity while interacting with the broader themes of memory and introspection.

Throughout the interconnected spaces, light and shadow play an important role, enhancing the atmosphere of the garden. The careful balance between solid forms and open areas creates opportunities for pause and reflection. This thoughtful arrangement emphasizes the ritualistic nature of memory, inviting visitors to engage with their surroundings in a contemplative manner.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
