EPS Foam Insulation in Shipping Container Housing for Urban Living

Project in-detail

Configured with closed-cell EPS foam insulation, this shipping container housing solution integrates natural light and private terraces to create efficient urban living spaces.
5 key facts about this project
01
Shipping containers are configured to optimize spatial efficiency in urban settings.
02
The design incorporates closed-cell EPS foam for enhanced thermal insulation.
03
Natural light is maximized through strategically placed windows in each unit.
04
Private terraces extend living spaces, promoting outdoor relaxation.
05
Vertical electrical raceways provide organized wiring solutions throughout the design.

The project focuses on the application of shipping containers as a practical housing solution in urban settings, particularly in London, where the need for affordable residences is pressing. It explores the mobility and adaptability of containers, allowing them to blend into the city’s diverse landscape. This design responds to the challenge of using land efficiently in crowded areas.

Design Flexibility

Shipping containers come in different sizes to accommodate various living requirements. A unit with dimensions of 6 m x 3.5 m can house a single resident, while a larger 12 m x 3.5 m option is designed for a resident and a small companion. There is also a configuration of 2 x 12 m x 3.5 m that accommodates up to four residents. These size options make it easier to provide suitable living arrangements, maximizing the use of limited space.

Public and Private Spaces

The layout emphasizes a thoughtful balance between communal and personal areas. By incorporating shared spaces and private terraces attached to each unit, the design fosters a sense of community while ensuring privacy for individuals. Encouraging interactions among residents, this arrangement helps build connections in urban environments, where such interactions can be harder to find.

Natural Light and Ventilation

Attention is given to natural light and airflow in each unit. Windows are strategically placed to allow ample light into both sleeping and living areas. This ventilation strategy improves comfort and creates a welcoming indoor environment. By focusing on light and air, the design enhances the overall quality of life for those living in these small spaces.

Material Components

Key materials are selected to enhance resilience and performance. The primary structure consists of shipping containers lined with closed-cell EPS foam panels. These panels help reduce condensation and improve thermal insulation. The interior surfaces are finished with plywood panels, which add durability and a pleasant appearance. Vertical electrical raceways are included for organized wiring, allowing efficient use of space and maintenance.

The design showcases how shipping containers can effectively provide housing that meets residents' needs while promoting community connections. Attention to functional aspects, along with careful material choices, supports a practical approach to urban living.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
