ISHELLI is located in Iceland, a country known for its unique landscapes of icy glaciers and volcanic rock. The building serves as a cultural center, focusing on cinematic experiences while embodying the striking geological characteristics of the region. The design concept revolves around two distinct forms: one that resembles volcanic stone and another that mimics ice. This approach aims to blend natural elements with modern design.

Conceptual Framework

The design combines two contrasting shapes to reflect the dual nature of Iceland's environment. One shell appears like a block of ice emerging from a rugged terrain, capturing the essence of the island's geological features. This design creates a visual statement while respecting the local landscape and climate, forging a connection between the structure and its environment.

Materiality and Surface Treatment

The outer shell consists of polycarbonate plates that feature patterns resembling ice. These plates are designed to catch light and produce a soft glow at night. The choice of this material enhances the aesthetic quality of the building while ensuring energy efficiency. The inner cinema shell mimics the texture of volcanic stone, creating a visual contrast that emphasizes the two forms working together.

Interior Experience

Stepping inside ISHELLI feels like entering an ice cave. A large volcanic stone sits at the center of the space and acts as a gathering point for visitors. Surrounding this central feature, the layout accommodates two levels: the upper level serves as the entry and exhibition area, while the lower level contains bar and service facilities. This arrangement offers visitors varied experiences as they move through the building.

Cultural Connection

The design includes engravings on the cinema shell that showcase famous scenes from films shot in Iceland. These details add a layer of cultural significance and invite closer examination. They strengthen the relationship between the building and the local film industry, enriching the experience for those who visit.

The interaction between the polycarbonate outer shell and the textured volcanic stone creates a visually interesting form. It offers a practical yet engaging space that caters to cultural activities while embracing the natural landscape.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
