The Kurgi Observation Tower is located near Kurgi Farm in Latvia, an area rich in both culture and natural beauty. Designed as an observation point, the tower reflects the region's historical connection to horses. Its structure connects with the landscape, maintaining an overall design concept that honors local identity and environmental context. When viewed from above, the tower resembles a horse’s head, reinforcing the bond between architectural form and cultural significance.

Design Concept

The tower’s design incorporates three key intertwining elements that convey a narrative rooted in local culture. Each element plays a specific role in the overall composition, creating a unified experience for visitors. This thoughtful arrangement allows the structure to engage with its natural surroundings, emphasizing the importance of both nature and history in local heritage.

Site Context

Located in an area known for its dense forests, the site represents nearly 50% of Latvia’s green coverage. This rich ecological backdrop influences the design, ensuring that the tower fits comfortably into its environment. The historical context of collective farms, particularly from the Soviet Era, adds further relevance to the site. By placing the tower within this rich landscape, the design reflects a strong sense of place, connecting modern architecture to the traditions of the past.

Material Choice

The design features oak, specifically chosen for its strength and durability. This wood contributes to the structure’s aesthetic while also providing longevity in the face of harsh weather conditions. Oak also holds a special place in Latvian culture, symbolizing resilience and connection to the land. The material choice complements the overall narrative of the tower and enhances its connection to the region's identity.

Visitor Experience

Rising to 35 meters, the Kurgi Observation Tower offers a varied experience through multiple observation platforms. Visitors can explore the ascending paths that lead to sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. The design encourages interaction, allowing guests to engage with the biosphere around them. Spaces throughout the tower are thoughtfully arranged with seating for reflection. A winding balcony wraps around the upper levels, creating an open area for visitors to fully appreciate the natural environment. This blend of exploration and observation makes the tower a meaningful addition to the local landscape.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
