Enclosed Greenery in a Light-Filled Space for Community Dining

Project in-detail

A dual-level design separates dark, intimate spaces from bright, open areas.
02
The greenhouse is the central element, promoting a year-round connection to nature.

Local food options are integrated, supporting community sustainability through surplus sales.
04
The bar area utilizes a more massive material approach to enhance a cavernous atmosphere.
05
Transitional spaces encourage movement and exploration between varied atmospheres.

CHiAR OSCURO is an exploration of the contrasting seasonal qualities of Iceland, integrating light and darkness into its overall design. Located in a region known for its long summer days and extended winter nights, the design aims to offer users a unique experience that reflects these natural rhythms. The building features two levels: the first level embraces shadows, creating an intimate setting, while the second level is illuminated by abundant natural light, providing a sharp contrast that enhances user engagement.

Spatial Dynamics

The first floor is designed to provide a sense of enclosure, encouraging quiet reflection. The dim lighting creates a cozy atmosphere that invites visitors to linger. This choice of space allows for a personal experience, as users can appreciate their surroundings in a more intimate manner.

On the second level, a greenhouse takes center stage, filled with natural light. This space promotes a connection to the outdoors, showcasing greenery and vibrant life. The design encourages movement through the building, as users travel from the darker areas to the brightness of the greenhouse, reinforcing a sense of progression.

User Engagement

The transition from the bar on the first floor to the dining area above guides users through the experience. This design decision highlights the journey from solitude to social interaction. The layout facilitates exploration, allowing visitors to engage with different atmospheres and settings as they move through the space.

Sustainability and Community Integration

The project also focuses on sustainability by offering food options aimed at local residents. Selling leftover products encourages a relationship with the community and supports local culture. This aspect not only benefits residents but also provides a meaningful experience for visitors who wish to connect with Icelandic traditions.

Throughout CHiAR OSCURO, the presence of greenery reinforces the sense of being in nature. Users are surrounded by plant life, deepening their connection to the environment. Each transition between spaces invites exploration of the balance between light and dark, showcasing the unique character of the Icelandic landscape.
