The Cone Meditation Cabin is located in the Ozolini region of Latvia, designed as a space for contemplation that brings together sound, meditation, and the natural surroundings. It draws inspiration from Latvian mythology, particularly the figure of Jumis, the god of fertility. The overall concept focuses on creating an environment that enhances auditory experiences while promoting reflection and connection to nature. This unique structure aims to provide users with an immersive experience that deepens their awareness of both sound and space.

Design Concept

The design of the Cone centers on the interplay between sound and space. Its shape is reminiscent of a loudspeaker, crafted to channel external sounds into the interior. This feature amplifies the natural sounds present in the Ozolini region, allowing meditators to engage with their environment in a profound way. The focus on acoustics supports a tranquil atmosphere, inviting deeper mindfulness and reflection.

Spatial Organization

Inside, the Cabin features a circular meditation area defined by perpendicular boards. This layout fosters a sense of openness and allows users to feel a connection with their surroundings. The large, circular sun window in the ceiling brings in natural light, creating changing light conditions throughout the day. The four-meter-high ceiling enhances the spatial experience, providing ample light and air that are essential for meditation.

Materiality and Sustainability

Local oak wood is utilized in the Cabin, known for its sound-absorbing qualities, which contribute to the acoustic features of the space. This material choice reflects a commitment to sustainability by using resources from the surrounding area. The design merges modern building techniques with traditional craftsmanship, creating a structure that respects the local identity and environment.

Acoustic Features

The Cabin is strategically placed near Lake Bezdibenė, which significantly contributes to the audio experience of the site. A sound aperture allows ambient sounds from the lake to filter into the Cabin, enriching the peaceful atmosphere. Additionally, the adjustable vertical louvers on one side of the building frame the natural views while offering users the ability to control their connection with the landscape.

In this calm setting, the blend of light and sound constructs a unique environment for those seeking meditation. Each element invites individuals to reflect as they engage with the rhythms of nature, enhancing the depth of their practice.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
