Samruni is a design located in Iceland that highlights the connection between people and nature while providing a space for cinema and community gatherings. It merges open and enclosed areas to create an inviting environment. Two main blocks intersect around a central theater, allowing visitors to experience films in a setting that reflects local culture and the surrounding landscape.

Design Concept

The design draws inspiration from regional features like the Gerduberg Basalt Columns and Turf Houses. These elements inform the project’s approach, encouraging a thoughtful relationship between the new building and the natural surroundings. The aim is to create a space that invites visitors to engage with both the architecture and the landscape.



Layout and Functionality

The first block of the layout includes a large lobby and reception area, along with a snack bar that directly connects to the cinema. This configuration is designed for ease of use, providing a warm welcome for visitors. The bar serves as a lively spot for social interaction, allowing people to gather and share their experiences before and after screenings.



Operational Core

The second block is focused on practical features that support the cinema’s function. It includes the movie theater, along with storage, office spaces, and bathroom facilities. This design helps streamline movement within the building while offering spaces for both private and shared activities. The arrangement allows visitors to navigate comfortably while accessing all necessary areas.



Sustainability and Design Integration

Sustainability is a key consideration in the project, particularly through the utilization of a green roof that helps reduce heating costs. This not only aligns with traditional Icelandic practices but also enhances the building’s energy efficiency. The structure's design, echoing the nearby mountains, helps it blend into the landscape, minimizing its visual impact.



The outdoor cinema on top of the first volume adds a distinct experience for viewers. People can enjoy films under the wide Icelandic sky, sitting around a communal fire pit in the central courtyard. This feature fosters connections among visitors while enhancing the overall enjoyment of the space.
