Canyon is situated in Vale de Moses, Portugal. The design serves as a retreat that connects people with nature. It emphasizes forest bathing—a practice that engages the senses with the natural environment. The structure reflects a deep understanding of the landscape, drawing inspiration from both the contours of the gorge and Indian pagoda architecture.

Design Concept

The building features a double-walled pagoda shape that is slightly rotated to fit the site’s topography. This approach allows the structure to blend with the natural slopes of the landscape. The verticality of the design echoes traditional pagodas, representing a journey that aligns with human experiences and needs.

Spatial Experience

Visitors enter Canyon through a narrow hallway that leads to the first level, which includes spaces for sleeping and bathing. A large window at this level provides views of the surrounding nature. This aspect invites the outdoor environment inside, creating what the designers refer to as the "norm of presence," which encourages occupants to interact with their surroundings.

Lighting and Movement

As visitors ascend a dark staircase to reach the upper level, they encounter a space filled with a beam of light from above. This shift from darkness to brightness creates a strong contrast that enhances the sense of discovery. The play of light and shadow is carefully considered, adding depth to the design and guiding the occupants along their journey.

Sustainability and Materiality

Canyon utilizes organic wood panels, reinforcing its connection with the local environment. These materials emphasize the project's focus on sustainability. Additionally, a grey-water system is integrated beneath the building's foundation. This system treats water for reuse, promoting ecological balance and demonstrating a commitment to environmental responsibility.

Canyon embodies a careful balance between its architectural form and the surrounding landscape. The building's design promotes a relationship with nature while providing a contemplative space. Natural light and the thoughtful flow of movement through the structure enhance the overall experience for its visitors. Each detail is considered to enrich the engagement with the peaceful environment.
