5 key facts about this project
01
Modular pathways create variable spatial experiences, enhancing visitor interaction with nature.
02
The observation tower offers multiple viewing platforms to appreciate bird behavior from different heights.
03
Nests serve as communal areas, promoting social engagement while blending into the natural landscape.
04
Design elements mimic avian experiences, creating emotional connections between visitors and wildlife.
05
Height-adjustable construction techniques adapt to the natural topography of the reserve.

The Co-Existential Abu Dhabi Flamingo Observation Tower stands within the tranquil landscape of Al Wathba Reserve. Its design aims to create a connection between people and local bird species, promoting an understanding of their relationship within a natural setting. The tower serves as a platform for visitors to engage with their environment while highlighting the balance required for coexistence in a world that often prioritizes human needs.

Pathway Design

The experience begins with a zigzagging boardwalk leading visitors through diverse habitats. This path introduces various emotional experiences. As the boardwalk narrows, it mimics the sense of confinement felt by birds. Wider sections offer a place for respite and contemplation. The transitions in space evoke empathy, encouraging visitors to reflect on their impact on the ecosystems around them.

Collective Areas

Strategically placed areas called nests provide spots for gathering and resting throughout the site. These collective spaces promote a sense of community and safety, allowing visitors to connect with one another amid their natural surroundings. Their design ensures they blend into the landscape, offering a place to engage with both nature and fellow visitors.

Observation Tower

The observation tower serves as the focal point of the visitor experience. Ascending leads to a panoramic view of the reserve, offering a unique perspective of the birds as they soar above. Various viewing platforms enable guests to appreciate the landscape and its inhabitants. Each level invites a deeper exploration of the environment, capturing the moment when birds take flight against the vast sky.

Materials and Construction

The design prioritizes modular construction techniques that work with the natural terrain. The base of the boardwalk includes height-adjustable columns and triangular components. This approach allows for adaptability, ensuring stability while addressing environmental concerns. Such thoughtful choices enhance the experience, weaving together human presence and the rich biodiversity of Al Wathba Reserve.

The careful connections between the pathway and the observation tower create an engaging journey that leads visitors toward a greater appreciation of the reserve's avian residents and the delicate balance of nature.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
