Embedded Volcanic Rock Structure Offering Immersive Lake Views

Project in-detail

Built into the Icelandic landscape, this structure utilizes volcanic rock for insulation and soundproofing while providing expansive views of the lake, serving as an intimate guesthouse for nature lovers.
5 key facts about this project
01
Embedded design utilizes the local topography for natural insulation.
02
Volcanic rock serves as both an acoustic barrier and thermal insulator.
03
Strategic positioning maximizes views of the adjacent lake.
04
Room layout promotes social interaction while providing private spaces.
05
Sustainable practices align with regional building traditions.

The Iceland Northern Lights room is a thoughtful design that fits into the rugged landscape of Iceland. It is located in a dramatic setting where nature dominates. The main idea is to create a space that makes guests feel connected to their surroundings. The focus is on immersion and sustainability, where local building practices inform the design, making it both functional and relevant to the environment. Visitors have the opportunity to engage with the stunning views while finding comfort within the structure.

Site Integration

The design uses earth sheltering techniques by placing the structure into the land. This choice helps reduce heat loss and ensures good insulation, which is crucial in the cold Icelandic climate. By embedding the building, the design takes advantage of the natural terrain. The layout allows for optimized views toward a nearby lake, enhancing the visual experience without overpowering the landscape.

Room Configuration

Multiple modules make up the layout, which includes various shared and private spaces. In addition to accommodations like double and single rooms, there are areas such as a barn, terrace, host house, and dining area. This arrangement encourages social interaction among guests while offering them quiet spots for relaxation. The flow between the different spaces is designed for ease of movement, creating a welcoming atmosphere.

Materiality

Volcanic rock is a key material in the design, playing an important role in insulation and soundproofing. It represents local building traditions and roots the structure in its geographical context. The use of volcanic rock contributes to the building’s energy efficiency while connecting it to the unique character of the Icelandic land.

Large openings in the structure invite natural light and frame the surrounding landscape. These design elements encourage guests to appreciate the views outside. This careful attention to connection with nature fosters a sense of calm and reflection, embodying the essence of the Icelandic experience.
