5 key facts about this project
The Monte d'Oiro Wine Tasting Room is located within the historic Quinta do Monte d'Oiro vineyard, recognized for its long-standing winemaking heritage since the 17th century. The design is focused on improving the wine tasting experience by connecting visitors to the landscape around them. By carefully planning the layout, the tasting room creates an environment where social interactions and the natural setting come together, allowing patrons to appreciate both the local wines and the beauty of the vineyards.
Spatial Design
The layout of the tasting room encourages openness and connection. Large panoramic windows are a prominent feature, offering wide views of the vineyard and allowing natural light to fill the space. Instead of conventional table settings, the design incorporates a round bench that promotes guest movement and conversation. This arrangement invites visitors to engage with one another or to take in the surrounding landscape at their leisure while enjoying the wines being offered.
Integration with the Landscape
The tasting room is designed to blend into the hillside, which helps it to coexist with the natural environment. The walls of the building slope outward at a 72-degree angle that reflects the sun’s position during the hottest parts of the day in summer. This thoughtful approach reduces direct sunlight within the space, creating a more comfortable atmosphere while making the most of the available daylight.
Sustainable Elements
Material choices play a significant role in the design. Onsite cast concrete is used for construction, featuring a smooth interior surface and a rough exterior that allows for local plant growth. This design aspect aids in integrating the building within its natural surroundings over time. Below the tasting room is an underground water basin that helps regulate indoor temperatures through passive climate control, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and environmental awareness.
Visitor Experience
Design details enhance the experience for guests. A mirrored wall reflects the landscape, providing additional visual interest for those seated in certain areas. The windows are fitted with a mobile sunscreen system that responds to the sun’s movement, ensuring optimal light conditions while reducing heat gain. These features not only create a pleasant environment for wine tasting but also highlight the strong connection between architecture, nature, and the enjoyment of fine wines.
