Elevated Walkway Connecting Double-Wall Structure with Natural Landscape

Project in-detail

An elevated walkway connects a double-wall structure that integrates thermal performance with the natural landscape, serving as a coffee shop and visitor center for those exploring the hiking trails of Hverfjall volcano.
5 key facts about this project
01
The coffee shop is designed with a semi-basement to enhance thermal performance.
02
The double-wall construction contributes to energy efficiency and comfort.
03
An elevated walkway leads visitors directly into the hiking trails.
04
Large skylight openings in the waffle slab create bright communal spaces.
05
Recycling coffee grounds for fertilizer promotes sustainability in the surrounding landscape.

The coffee shop located at the foot of Hverfjall volcano in the Mývatn region serves as a gateway for visitors embarking on their hiking journeys. Its design connects the built environment with the surrounding landscape, preparing guests physically and mentally for outdoor exploration. This space not only provides refreshments but also enhances the overall visitor experience by offering orientation and comfort.

Massing Strategy

The building's massing strategy highlights views toward important landmarks, allowing it to function as a point of reference in the area. The design takes advantage of the natural topography, enabling a strong link between the structure and its environment. This approach helps visitors appreciate their surroundings and understand the location better.

Spatial Organization

At the heart of the coffee shop is a central atrium that connects various areas, making it easy for visitors to navigate. Seating areas, the coffee counter, and exhibition spaces are arranged in a way that fosters social interaction. This layout encourages guests to relax and spend time together before heading out on their adventures. The arrangement of spaces supports a smooth flow, guiding visitors from one activity to the next.

Thermal Efficiency and Sustainability

A semi-basement design contributes to thermal performance by enhancing the building’s ability to regulate temperature. It connects the structure more closely to the ground, helping to maintain comfortable conditions inside. The insulative double-wall construction further supports energy efficiency. Additionally, the waffle slab allows for large skylight openings that increase natural light without compromising the structural soundness. The project incorporates sustainability practices, such as recycling coffee grounds for use as fertilizer, reflecting a commitment to environmental care.

An elevated walkway leads from the coffee shop to the hiking trails, signaling the transition from the indoor space to the open air. This pathway provides visitors with an inviting route into the natural landscape, encouraging them to engage fully with their surroundings. The connection between the structure and the outdoors becomes a journey, inviting exploration and appreciation of the beauty that lies ahead.
