5 key facts about this project
The Tectonic Elevation project is located on the European side of a tectonic ridge. It functions as a visitor center that offers elevated viewpoints for observing the unique landscapes of Europe and America. The design concept focuses on creating a tall structure that interacts thoughtfully with the geological features of the area. It highlights the relationship between architecture and the natural forces at play along the boundary of tectonic continental plates.
Structural Concept
The design centers around two main goals. The first is to form elevation above the ridge, providing high-altitude viewing platforms that enhance the overall visitor experience. This elevation gives a different perspective on the landscape and emphasizes the building's integration with its surroundings. The second goal is to illustrate the horizontal forces and sliding movements that occur at the tectonic meeting point. This aspect merges the physical building with the geological dynamics present in the area.
Interior Layout
Inside, the building includes a central gathering space featuring a sunken fireplace, promoting warmth and social interaction. It includes practical amenities like gender-neutral bathrooms and a management office to enhance functionality. A prominent staircase flows elegantly through the space, leading to a self-service café area and granting access to different viewing platforms throughout the structure.
Functional Design Elements
The project utilizes concrete produced on-site for certain structural components, while other elements are manufactured elsewhere and assembled on location. This reflects a focus on sustainable construction practices. The design incorporates geothermal technology, using warm water from nearby caves to create an effective heating system. Orientation is carefully planned, allowing the building to deflect winter winds while protecting an outdoor meeting space from accumulating snow.
Distinctive Features
The building’s form is defined by its upward bending shape, which ties it to the landscape. Expansive terraces invite visitors to engage more with their surroundings and provide access to two bathing caves. Well-placed viewing platforms allow for the enjoyment of sunsets and polar lights, offering private, restful spaces. Here, people can connect with the natural beauty of the site while appreciating the building’s role in the environment.
