Elevated Viewing Platforms Enhancing Natural Ventilation and Visitor Engagement

Project in-detail

Elevated pathways inspired by bird anatomy create an engaging visitor experience in a habitat that supports over 260 bird species, emphasizing natural ventilation and dynamic viewpoints throughout the wetland.
5 key facts about this project
01
Ramps modeled after bird wings enhance accessibility and engagement.
02
The design utilizes natural ventilation principles to improve air quality.
03
Elevated viewing platforms offer sweeping vistas of the wetland ecosystem.
04
Strategically placed skylights maximize natural light throughout the center.
05
Dedicated zones create a clear connection between nature and visitor activities.

The design for the Al Wathba Wetlands focuses on creating a meaningful experience for visitors within an important ecological area, home to over 260 bird species. By centering the project around the concept of the “Birds Eye View,” the design aims to foster connection with nature. The carefully arranged pathways throughout the site facilitate accessibility and encourage interaction with the abundant flora and fauna, while distinct functional zones enhance the overall visitor experience.

Design Concept

The design draws inspiration from the anatomy of a bird's wing, with pathways that provide elevated viewpoints. This arrangement consists of two groups of ramps, each containing three ramps designed for accessibility. Such thoughtful planning ensures that everyone can easily navigate the space, making it inviting for diverse groups of visitors who seek to explore the wetlands.

Spatial Organization

The layout strategically places the terrace and café to the south, taking advantage of views of the surrounding lakes. This positioning also allows for natural ventilation, using the southeast winds to create a comfortable environment. The connection made between the entrance and the café encourages visitors to engage with the site, promoting a sense of community within the natural setting.

Light and Height Variation

Variations in height are a key element in the design, shaping how visitors experience the site. Starting from the entrance in the secondary feather, individuals move through the display area in the contour feather and pass into the down feather leading to the terrace. This transition enhances engagement with the landscape and allows for changes in light, from softer illumination at the entrance to brightness at the viewing area.

Material Consideration

Skylights are incorporated into the design to maximize natural light within the interior spaces. These elements not only brighten the area but also reflect solar heat, creating a pleasant atmosphere. As visitors progress through the various spaces, they encounter different lighting conditions, enhancing their sensory experience of the wetlands.

The design thoughtfully balances open and enclosed spaces, responding to the character of the environment. By creating a strong connection between built elements and nature, the project reinforces the significance of the Al Wathba Wetlands while inviting visitors to appreciate the natural landscape.
