Elevated Viewing Platform Crafted from Wood Amidst the Kemeri Bog

Project in-detail

Crafted from wood and integrating with the landscape, the elevated platform provides panoramic views of the Kemeri Bog while offering an educational space for visitors to engage with the local ecology.
5 key facts about this project
01
Crafted entirely from locally sourced wood to minimize environmental impact.
02
Features a series of accessible slopes and landings designed for all visitors.
03
Integrates educational pictograms directly into the walkway for interactive learning.
04
The layout provides 360-degree views of the Kemeri Bog's unique landscape.
05
Developed to navigate around existing trees, preserving the natural ecosystem.

The Kemeri Observation project is located in the unique landscape of Kemeri, Latvia, known for its rich mixture of forests, lakes, swamps, and raised bogs. The building serves as a platform for viewing and education, designed to fit into the natural environment. The design moves away from the conventional idea of a tower, presenting a form that appears to rise from the bog itself, encouraging a connection between visitors and the landscape.

Structural Integration

The design includes a series of slopes and landings that create an accessible path for all visitors, including those who may find it challenging to navigate traditional walking routes. The layout supports a non-linear exploration of the space, enhancing the interaction with the surrounding natural features. Each landing offers a different viewpoint, resulting in a complete 360-degree experience of the bog and its scenic beauty.

Material Choices

Wood is the main material used for this project, connecting the new structure with the existing boardwalk and observation tower in the area. This choice helps the building blend into the landscape, maintaining a light visual presence that does not overwhelm the surroundings. Metal elements provide critical support and safety, ensuring that the structure remains durable and functional despite changing weather conditions.

Environmental Responsiveness

The placement of the building has been carefully considered to avoid disturbing the existing trees, which minimizes impact on the sensitive ecosystem. The path is designed to follow the same route as the previous boardwalk, which helps in reducing ecological disruption and promotes sustainability through the reuse of materials. This mindful approach illustrates a commitment to preserving the bog environment while improving the visitor experience.

Interactive Education

Educational elements are woven directly into the design. Instead of traditional signs, pictograms are burned into the wood along the pathway. This method encourages visitors to interactively learn about the local ecology. It also keeps the area looking tidy, avoiding clutter from typical signage.

The design features a viewing platform that offers clear sightlines into the surrounding bog, allowing visitors to engage with the landscape and understand the diverse ecosystems present. It invites appreciation for the natural environment from a thoughtfully designed vantage point.
