Weave On is a unique retreat located in New Zealand, a region known for its rich biodiversity. The design serves the purpose of providing a space for meditation and reflection, emphasizing the relationship between the natural environment and human well-being. The project aims to address issues such as climate change and deforestation while creating a comfortable setting for visitors seeking peace and connection with nature.

Design Concept

The design emphasizes a strong connection between indoor spaces and the outdoor landscape. The integration of natural elements enhances the experience for those using the retreat. Operable skylights and horizontal glazing are included to ensure proper ventilation and let in ample sunlight. This allows for a comfortable atmosphere within the meditation spaces, making the users feel part of their surroundings.

Spatial Configuration

At the heart of the design is the meditation area, arranged specifically to encourage calm and mental focus. The layout invites users to engage with the natural world around them, promoting deeper reflection. The cabin is raised, creating shaded areas underneath where visitors can relax. This elevation also allows for views of the surrounding forest, enhancing the visitor's experience.

Materiality

Sustainability is a key aspect of the design, with wood as the primary material. Taking inspiration from traditional Portuguese timber construction, the wood serves structural and cladding purposes. This choice not only meets functional needs but also allows the cabin to age gracefully with its environment. As the wood weathers over time, it will blend naturally with the nearby pine trees, supporting the project's ecological goals.

User Experience

The design incorporates seating areas around the meditation space, encouraging relaxation and social interaction among visitors. These zones are thoughtfully positioned to enhance the overall experience while promoting tranquility. The play of light and shadow throughout the interior creates a welcoming atmosphere, inviting moments of quiet reflection.

Landscaping complements the building, providing a backdrop that reinforces the connection to nature. The layout ensures that each visit provides a new experience within the surrounding environment, allowing users to find connection and peace in their time spent at the retreat.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
