"Haven on Earth" is an architectural design situated near the Serra de Estrela mountain range, specifically close to the Vale de Moses Yoga Retreat. The aim is to create a refuge that merges with the forest environment, highlighting the importance of sustainability and the comfort of its users. The overall design concept revolves around an elevated living space that reduces its impact on nature while fostering a strong connection between residents and the outdoors.

Elevation and Form

The Pod is built above ground, which minimizes disruption to the surrounding ecosystem. This elevation not only lessens the ecological footprint but also provides residents with distinct views of the landscape. Large windows are a key feature, offering expansive vistas and allowing natural light to flood the interior, enhancing the feeling of being surrounded by nature.

Interior Layout and Spatial Organization

Inside, the layout consists of two distinct areas: a bedroom equipped with a custom table-bed and a bathroom divided into three separate zones. Skylights add to the overall brightness of the space and create a sense of openness. This thoughtful organization promotes both comfort and practicality, ensuring that the living space feels cozy while maintaining a strong relationship with the environment.

Sustainable Features and Materiality

Timber is the primary material used in the Pod, reflecting a choice for renewable resources and enhancing the health benefits for its occupants. The natural qualities of timber support a smooth integration with the surroundings, which aligns with the project's focus on ecological responsibility. Additionally, features like a composting toilet and a gray water recycling system demonstrate an awareness of sustainable practices.

Architectural Performance

The design emphasizes effective solar panel orientation to maximize sunlight exposure and improve energy efficiency. Natural ventilation is facilitated through the use of sandwich panels, contributing to a comfortable indoor climate. The lightweight steel structure allows for quick assembly, minimizing the need for extensive site work, which aligns with the project’s respect for its natural setting.

The interior environment focuses on sensory experiences that enhance well-being. The design protects against external noise and temperature issues while welcoming natural sounds and light into the living space. This creates a balanced atmosphere where residents can feel connected to the natural world outside.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
