5 key facts about this project
The greenhouse restaurant, located near the Mývatn natural baths in Iceland, is designed to create a close relationship with its natural surroundings. It functions as a dining destination for visitors looking for a unique culinary experience that highlights the geothermal features of the area. The overall design combines the dining hall and greenhouse, allowing the building to blend into the landscape as if it is rising naturally from the ground.
Architectural Form
The design features two connected volumes that enhance both function and appearance. These shapes resemble an iceberg, mirroring the natural environment. This approach increases the amount of natural light entering the space, making it warm and inviting for guests. By integrating the building with the landscape, the design provides views of the Hverfjall volcano and the baths, ensuring that the site’s beauty is always present.
Interior Layout
Inside, the restaurant has two levels offering different dining experiences. Guests can opt for intimate seating or more open areas with wide views of the outdoors. A lobby includes a lounge area next to a terrarium, creating a peaceful atmosphere that complements the dining experience. The transition from the parking area to the lobby is designed to draw visitors in, encouraging them to explore what the restaurant offers.
Functional Spaces
Various functional spaces are included, such as a yoga room and a multi-purpose hall. These areas support a range of activities, reinforcing the restaurant's role as a community space. Service areas, including the kitchen, are designed to be practical yet unobtrusive, ensuring that behind-the-scenes operations do not disrupt the overall aesthetic of the restaurant.
Sustainable Design
The design prioritizes sustainability through the use of geothermal heating systems. This process draws heat from a geothermal probe, which is then processed with a heat pump, allowing the restaurant to generate its own energy. This method minimizes the impact on the environment and shows a commitment to responsible building practices that respect the natural surroundings.
Large glass walls are a key feature of the design. They provide diners with stunning views of the Icelandic landscape, creating a strong connection between the interior and the breathtaking scenery outside.
