Incorporates a biological wastewater treatment system for sustainability.
05
Design highlights local landscape, emphasizing the connection to nature.

The Iceland Greenhouse Restaurant is situated near the Myvatn Baths and Hverfjall Volcano, emphasizing a design that focuses on sustainability and a connection to the natural landscape. The idea behind the building fosters a close relationship between visitors and their environment. By elevating the structure, the design provides clear views of the striking Icelandic scenery, offering a chance to experience the northern lights. The restaurant serves multiple purposes, allowing it to host various activities while remaining welcoming to guests.

Design Concept

The design integrates elements of the natural environment with sustainable practices. The shape of the building mirrors the local landscape, creating a smooth transition between the restaurant, technical greenhouses, and observation areas. The use of transparent materials allows natural light to flood the interior, enhancing guests' connection to the outdoors and the unique surroundings.

Spatial Organization

Inside, the restaurant is sectioned into different functional areas, promoting a variety of experiences. Visitors can observe hydroponic farming, take in views of the volcanic landscape, or engage in educational activities about modern agriculture. This thoughtful arrangement maximizes interaction, ensuring that each area invites visitors to engage more with their environment.

Sustainability Strategies

A commitment to sustainability is central to the restaurant’s design. It features lightweight building materials and prefabricated wall panels to minimize construction time and reduce environmental impact. The project adheres to passive house standards to enhance energy efficiency, using effective thermal insulation and innovative heating solutions. Geothermal energy and heat recovery methods contribute to a reduced carbon footprint.

Water Management

Effective water management systems are another critical feature of the design. Rainwater will be collected in underground tanks for everyday use, while a biological wastewater treatment system is planned to minimize the environmental footprint. Additionally, kitchen waste will be diverted to a composting station, reflecting a dedication to responsible waste management.

On the restaurant's roof, an upper terrace is designed specifically for viewing the northern lights. This unique feature offers guests a chance to enjoy the natural beauty of the sky while experiencing the calm of the surrounding landscape.
