Vale de Moses is a yoga retreat located in the hills of Portugal, designed to support a focus on wellness and connection. The project features a terraced layout that balances communal areas with private spaces, providing a welcoming environment for those seeking mindfulness and personal reflection. The design integrates with the natural landscape, catering to the needs of visitors while maintaining a strong relationship with the surrounding environment.

Terraced Layout

The retreat's terraced design encourages social interaction while also offering solitude. Visitors can engage with one another in open spaces like fire pits and sundecks, promoting a sense of community. At the same time, the elevation changes allow for moments of privacy, where individuals can retreat and reflect away from the busyness of group activities.

Cabin Design

Each cabin follows a concept inspired by mountain ridges, featuring a narrowing focus and strategic height. This design allows the cabins to offer stunning views, inviting guests to connect with the natural landscape. The interiors are organized to accommodate two people comfortably, with designated areas for storage, relaxation, and personal care. Sliding doors enhance the functionality of the spaces, making them adaptable for various activities throughout the day.

Materiality and Integration

Construction utilizes timber frame methods, providing durability and addressing environmental concerns. The use of stone for the terraces reflects local building traditions, ensuring that the retreat blends with its surroundings. These material choices create a connection to Portuguese heritage while supporting contemporary design principles. The combination of materials fosters a sense of belonging in the landscape.

Relationship with Landscape

The design emphasizes its connection to the landscape, carefully considering the building's placement based on sun studies and topographical features. This attention to detail enhances the retreat's welcoming nature, allowing for a deeper connection between visitors and the environment. The layout guides guests through the site, with each step revealing new views and experiences within the natural setting.

The gradual slope of the terraces invites exploration, making each moment spent in the space feel significant, while the views serve as a reminder of the beauty of nature surrounding the retreat.
