The European Velo Stops project is designed to accommodate long-distance cyclists, providing essential facilities within a well-thought-out structure. Located in diverse landscapes, the design aims to blend functionality with environmental considerations. By elevating the building, it allows for an unobstructed path for cyclists below while creating a space that respects its natural surroundings.

Design Concept

The main idea behind the Velo Stops is to offer flexibility and utility for cyclists. The open frame at ground level enables an uninterrupted flow of the cycle path beneath, allowing cyclists to move freely. This design enhances their journey, creating a direct link between the cyclists and the environment around them.

Functional Levels

The building consists of multiple levels, each serving specific purposes for cyclists. The ground level connects directly to the cycle path, with gentle ramps leading to the upper areas. On Level VII, an open-air terrace provides a place for relaxation and socializing after rides.

Level VI includes a kitchen equipped with an electric stove, mini refrigerator, and sink, catering to the needs of cyclists for refueling. In this level, there are also seating areas and bike storage, creating a welcoming environment for users to share experiences.

Levels III, IV, and V are dedicated to rest and provide sleeping spaces, private storage, and terraces for personal comfort. Level II focuses on hygiene, featuring a restroom, shower, and bike maintenance station, ensuring all necessary facilities are available for a complete cycling experience.

Materiality and Structure

A minimal and modular approach defines the materials used in the Velo Stops. The frame is constructed from steel, providing strong support for the entire structure. Walls on the North and South sides are insulated, promoting thermal efficiency. The exterior is covered with corrugated metal, which adds durability, while insulated plywood is used for the interiors, enhancing comfort.

Attention to detail is evident throughout the design. The positioning of the building and the arrangement of functional spaces make it more than just a stop for cyclists. The flow of the cycle path through the structure, along with the careful handling of natural light, helps create a connection that enhances the overall experience of using the facility.
