The Al Wathba Flamingo Visitor Center is a new facility located on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi, within the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve. This area is recognized for its rich wildlife, especially the large flocks of migratory flamingos that come to breed. The design concept focuses on creating a connection to both the landscape and the visitor experience, as well as enhancing the understanding of this unique ecosystem.

Design Concept

The design utilizes flowing lines and smooth shapes that reflect the natural features of the wetland environment. Instead of standing solidly on the ground, the Visitor Center is elevated, allowing it to blend into the surroundings. This approach minimizes disruption to wildlife habitats. Elevation also enhances the views for visitors, giving them a chance to watch the birds and other wildlife without metal barriers.

Visitor Experience

Upon arriving at the center, visitors are guided to a tent-like parking area. This space prepares guests for their exploration ahead. They then walk along an elevated path that leads to an open courtyard and the main entrance of the building. This carefully designed route encourages anticipation and a sense of adventure as they make their way inside.

Interior Spaces

Inside the Visitor Center, design elements continue to highlight the connection to the environment. A wood-clad ceiling in the reception area provides warmth and offers sweeping views of the wetlands. As guests move deeper into the center, they find a floating staircase that leads down to the lower level. This area includes a cafe, a waiting hall, and a terrace that opens up to another courtyard, allowing visitors to fully experience the surrounding landscape.

Cultural Considerations

The design also draws inspiration from traditional Bedouin tents, connecting the center to the region's cultural history. This relationship with local heritage ensures that the building is not only functional but also meaningful. By using local palm wood for the structure and its exterior, the design emphasizes sustainable practices and local resources.

The ample terrace provides clear views of the wetlands, encouraging guests to engage with the vibrant natural world that surrounds the center.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
