Val de Moses is a sleep retreat located in the rugged hills of central Portugal. The design focuses on integrating buildings with the surrounding landscape in a way that encourages relaxation and personal growth. Small, lightweight structures known as PODS form the core of the retreat, embodying a philosophy of harmony with nature. The goal is to create spaces conducive to introspection and well-being.

Structure and Placement

The PODS are carefully positioned on the hillside, allowing them to coexist with the natural terrain. Elevated on stilts, these structures maintain the integrity of the land, ensuring minimal disruption to the environment. This method of construction supports both reversible design and respect for the landscape, making it easier for nature to coexist with human presence.

Natural Light and Connection

Large glass openings mark the design of the PODS, providing ample natural light and extensive views of the picturesque landscape. These features establish a strong connection between indoor and outdoor environments. Light filters through outdoor pergolas, resulting in a dynamic play of shadows and brightness inside the living areas. This relationship with light enhances the overall experience, encouraging guests to appreciate their surroundings.

Material Choices

Extensive use of untreated wood creates a natural and warm aesthetic throughout the PODS. The roofs incorporate traditional Portuguese tiles, linking the design to the local architectural context. These choices not only foster a comfortable atmosphere but also reflect a commitment to sustainability by harmonizing with the environment.

Sustainable Systems

The retreat incorporates sustainable features, such as solar panels on the roofs of the PODS that generate electricity. This makes the structures self-sufficient in terms of energy. The water management system captures rainwater for reuse, further supporting the project's ecological goals. Practical design elements work together to enhance the experience of both the landscape and the retreat.

The careful arrangement of light and shadow within the living spaces creates a peaceful setting, inviting guests to engage with the tranquil beauty of the surrounding hills.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
