Elevated Plinth Spaces with Glazed Enclosures Overlooking Lake Cernostes

Project in-detail

Elevated on a plinth and enclosed in glass, the artist's studio offers 360-degree views of Lake Cernostes while integrating community living with functionality for two families.
5 key facts about this project
01
Elevated workspace allows for 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape.
02
Glazed enclosure enhances natural light and integrates indoor-outdoor living.
03
Utilizes existing foundations to minimize environmental impact.
04
Central hearth fosters communal interaction for dual-family living.
05
Longhouse orientation captures optimal sunlight throughout the year.

The design presents a reinterpretation of the traditional longhouse, located overlooking Lake Cernostes in Southern Latvia. It combines an art studio, gallery, and dual-family residence within a single structure. The approach centers on the idea of placing the artist on exhibit, inviting a deeper interaction between creative work and the surrounding landscape.

Concept and Elevation
The main idea focuses on elevating the artist’s workspace on a raised plinth, which is enclosed by a glazed box. This arrangement provides views of the landscape from all directions, allowing natural scenery to influence the act of creation. By doing so, it shifts the role of the artist from a mere observer to an active participant in nature’s beauty.

Sustainability and Orientation
To address environmental concerns, the design employs a smaller building footprint that utilizes the existing foundations, ensuring that no trees are cut down during construction. The plinth acts as thermal mass, supporting passive solar design. The building is oriented along an East-West axis, which maximizes sunlight exposure during winter months. This design choice allows warmth and natural light to enter the southern side while framing picturesque views towards the lake.

Spatial Arrangement
The building layout accommodates two families, delivering flexibility in the living spaces. There are intentional separations between private areas and common zones, which enhances privacy while encouraging interaction. A central hearth serves as a gathering point, fostering connections among those who live and work here, while also providing a cozy setting for family activities.

Integration with Nature
Living areas effortlessly connect to outdoor spaces, promoting interaction with the surrounding environment. This design encourages using the outdoors for various activities, enriching daily life. Each aspect of the project reflects a thoughtful balance between residential living and artistic expression, highlighting a clear appreciation for the beautiful landscape that surrounds it. The result is a space where creativity and family life can coexist harmoniously.
