The Abu Dhabi Flamingo Observation Tower is located in the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve. It aims to provide an enriching experience for visitors while respecting the natural environment. The design integrates elements of local culture with a modern architectural language. The observation tower serves as a focal point for exploring the unique biodiversity of the wetlands, particularly the flamingos that inhabit the area.

Design Approach

The design utilizes a modular system, which helps keep construction efficient and allows for future changes. A boardwalk connects visitors with the observation tower, drawing them through the landscape. This zig-zag pathway links the structure to the wetlands, enhancing the journey and making the surrounding nature part of the visitor experience.

Structural Elements

The observation tower is set on a pile bent foundation that reduces disturbance to the ecosystem and offers stability. Inside, a truss system supports a glass lift and is connected to a staircase, facilitating movement between levels. As visitors ascend, they can take in various views of the wetlands, experiencing its beauty from multiple angles.

Accessibility Features

Accessibility is a key consideration in the tower's design. A ramp on the ground floor and lifts allow visitors with disabilities to reach every level. These thoughtful features make the observation space more inclusive and welcoming, inviting a wider range of people to engage with the wetlands.

Visual Aesthetics

The tower's elevation features an angled ribbon form, culminating in triangular shapes that reflect the natural landscape. The design takes inspiration from the colors of flamingos and the local sandy areas, creating a connection between the building and its surroundings. At the top, a wire net provides safety for visitors while ensuring unobstructed views of the wetlands. This feature enhances the experience of watching the birds in their habitat.

Translucent concrete railings define the observation levels, offering safety and visibility. These elements allow visitors to enjoy the breathtaking views of the wetland while feeling secure in their surroundings.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
