**Wingspan Vista Tower Overview**

The Wingspan Vista Tower is located in De Smet, South Dakota, strategically positioned adjacent to Highway 14. Its design is influenced by the surrounding landscape and avian life, aiming to create an observation platform that enhances public engagement with nature. The site offers a visual connection to key ecological features, including Silver Lake and the De Smet Forest, facilitating interactions with diverse bird species while appreciating the region’s natural beauty.

**Spatial Strategy and User Experience**

The tower features a multi-level structure that mimics the form of a bird in flight, with observation platforms at heights of 6 meters and 9 meters. This design allows for optimal viewing angles while minimizing disturbances to nesting sites. The architecture includes distinct pathways that separate human activity from bird habitats, promoting a safe environment for avian life. Users can engage with the site through telescopes positioned at various heights, enhancing the educational experience while ensuring minimal disruption to wildlife.

**Materiality and Site Consideration**

A careful selection of materials contributes to the environmental performance and aesthetic appeal of the tower. The primary structure is constructed from wood, complemented by steel for structural integrity, glass to maximize natural light, and concrete for the foundation and staircases. The building's orientation is designed to direct views toward Silver Lake and other notable landscapes, enabling visitors to appreciate both the scenic vistas and the ecological richness of the area while reinforcing the project's commitment to sustainability.
