5 key facts about this project
01
Elevated observation platform allows for unique views of the northern lights.
02
Organic design inspired by natural forms found in the surrounding landscape.
03
Dual levels provide distinct experiences for visitors, from open air to sheltered seating.
04
Steel screw piles used for foundation offer stability against volcanic terrain.
05
Natural materials selected to blend with the volcanic environment and reduce impact.

"ASCENT TO STILLNESS" is set within the Hverfjall volcanic crater in northeastern Iceland. It functions as a lookout point, designed to offer visitors elevated views of the surrounding landscape, particularly Lake Myvatn. The design emphasizes a fusion of built form and the natural environment, allowing people to appreciate the unique geological features of the area and the natural phenomena, such as the northern lights.

Integration of Structure and Landscape
The design rises above the volcanic terrain, creating a strong connection between the viewer and the vast surroundings. By elevating the lookout, it provides an enhanced perspective that deepens the experience of exploring this striking landscape. This elevation serves both a functional purpose and a conceptual one, inviting people to engage more fully with their environment.

Organic Design Elements
The shape of the lookout point draws inspiration from natural forms that symbolize life, like eggs and ship skeletons. This results in a fluid silhouette that blends with the landscape rather than overpowering it. Such an approach aims to reflect nature's designs, making the structure feel like a natural extension of its setting, rather than an imposition upon it.

Spatial Configuration
The lookout point features two distinct levels. The upper level allows for open views while the lower level provides a sheltered area for seating. This arrangement accommodates different needs and preferences among visitors. People can enjoy the open sky above or find respite below. The design encourages movement throughout the space, letting visitors engage with the landscape at multiple vantage points.

Material Considerations
The structural foundation consists of steel screw piles that stabilize the lookout against the rugged volcanic soil. Wooden beams create the framework of the structure, while both levels have decking that includes a non-slip surface. This choice of materials reflects the intent to harmonize with the natural surroundings, ensuring the construction is both functional and respectful of the environment.

The result is a design that effectively combines observation with interaction, drawing visitors into the tranquil beauty of Hverfjall while providing a thoughtful space for reflection and appreciation.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
