5 key facts about this project
"Land and Lightness" is located in the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, designed to create a connection between the built environment and nature. The structure serves as an observation tower, capturing the essence of the bird life that inhabits the area. The design concept focuses on minimizing the impact on the landscape while enhancing visitors' experiences and respecting the local ecosystem.
Design Concept
The concept features a tower that is raised above the ground by four slender stilts. This design allows the structure to hover gently over the wetland, reducing its footprint on the environment. The simplicity of the form integrates with the natural surroundings, making it feel like a part of the landscape. The white walls reflect changing light conditions, creating a dynamic interplay with the environment throughout the day.
Experiential Interaction
Interaction with the environment is a key element of the design. Visitors can experience the shadows cast by the structure, listen to the sounds of birds nearby, and see the reflections in the water below. Openings throughout the tower are designed to enhance these sensory experiences as people ascend to the viewing platform. Each level offers a new perspective and encourages exploration of the surroundings.
Materiality
Material selection is also important to the project's character. The main structure uses lightweight steel frames along with tensile wire cross bracing to ensure stability while maintaining a light appearance. The stair structure consists of welded steel tube supports with handrails for safety. The flooring features perforated steel platforms that allow visibility and airflow, inviting natural light into the space. The cladding is made from white vulcanized rubber panels, which blend with the bright sky.
As visitors reach the observation platform, they find themselves surrounded by panoramic views of the wetlands, offering a moment of connection with the natural world and a chance to reflect on the environment.
