The architectural design project "Incubate" is situated within the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve in Abu Dhabi, UAE. This project serves multiple purposes, primarily focusing on the conservation of the reserve's delicate ecosystem while providing educational opportunities for visitors. It integrates human interaction with nature in a manner that minimizes environmental impact and enhances biodiversity awareness.

The main structure features a cylindrical form topped with an observation deck that resembles a bird's nest, creating a natural link between the design and its avian inhabitants. Elevation plays a crucial role, as the building's height allows for observation without disturbing the wetland ecosystem below. The project incorporates modular aluminum boardwalks that create a pathway throughout the site, facilitating movement while ensuring minimal disruption to the habitat.

Architectural Features and Functionality

The design of "Incubate" is characterized by its thoughtful layering: Refuge, Veil, and Prospect. The Refuge serves as the welcome area, introducing visitors to the reserve and offering educational displays that emphasize local wildlife conservation. The Veil consists of focused observation rooms that promote a quiet and contemplative experience, while the Prospect tier, the observation deck, offers expansive views of the wetland.

The unique aspect of this project lies in its commitment to transparency and accessibility. Designed with aluminum bar grading for the boardwalk, it allows natural light to filter through and enhances visitor experience by integrating the environment beneath the structure. The use of sustainable materials, such as rammed earth for the walls and solar photovoltaic panels for energy, further aligns the project with its ecological mission.

Innovative Design Approaches

An important design consideration for "Incubate" is the modular nature of the boardwalk system, which allows for adaptability in response to changing environmental conditions. This flexibility in design can accommodate future alterations, ensuring longevity and relevance of the structure within the reserve. Additionally, the incorporation of ramps supports accessibility, making the architecture inclusive for all visitors.

The architectural elements, including support structures such as steel channel supports and tube legs, are meticulously planned to ensure stability while keeping sightlines open for unobscured views of the wetland. Furthermore, the design emphasizes a cultural reflection through the selection of materials, which resonate with the local context and landscape.

Learn more about the architectural plans, sections, and designs of the "Incubate" project to better understand its conception and development. Exploring these elements will provide deeper insights into the innovative architectural ideas that drive this initiative in the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
