Elevated Meditation Space With Raw Wood Surfaces and Stone Plinth

Project in-detail

An elevated meditation space crafted with raw wood surfaces and a durable stone plinth, set against the natural landscape of Latvia, serves as a tranquil retreat for reflection and connection with the environment.
5 key facts about this project
01
Elevated meditation area designed to enhance views of the surrounding forest.
02
Integrated storage solutions discreetly conceal utilities for prolonged stays.
03
Timber frame construction rests on a durable stone plinth for stability.
04
Raw wood interiors create a warm, natural aesthetic connected to the environment.
05
Triple glazing enhances thermal efficiency while maximizing natural light.

Debesis Woods is located in Latvia and focuses on blending traditional forms of architecture with modern needs. Serving as a retreat, it combines areas for living and meditation. The design concept emphasizes the connection to the surrounding environment and incorporates elements from local folklore, allowing occupants to experience tranquility away from city life.

Design Layout

The layout features an interlocking arrangement of living and meditation spaces, which avoids the use of physical walls to promote an airy feel. Each area has been planned to allow easy movement and interaction. For example, the bed is situated next to a long, narrow window that brings in light and offers views of the outside. This design choice encourages a relationship between the interior and the natural landscape.

Storage and Functionality

Efficient use of space is a critical part of the design. A wall connecting the entrance to the bedroom provides hidden storage for essentials like a compact kitchenette and food storage. This keeps the interior uncluttered and functional. A small enclosed bathroom is also included, maintaining proportional balance while ensuring necessary privacy and convenience for daily activities.

Material Composition

Debesis Woods utilizes a timber frame built upon a stone plinth, offering stability and resistance to various weather conditions. The walls are insulated, and triple glazing is employed for better energy retention. Inside, raw wood surfaces are polished to create a warm atmosphere and reflect the connection to nature. This choice of materials promotes comfort and simplicity, enhancing the overall experience of the space.

Light and Spatial Experience

The elongated design echoes the height of nearby trees, allowing the structure to blend into its forested setting. Light is a central element, with carefully placed windows that enable daylight to fill the rooms. A light well is incorporated to ensure even the deeper parts of the structure receive natural light. This thoughtful arrangement encourages occupants to engage with their surroundings and offers a place for quiet reflection.
