The Yoga House, located in the foothills of the Serra da Estrela mountains, serves as a peaceful retreat for meditation and yoga practice. Surrounded by coniferous forests and stunning views of the valley, the design focuses on creating a calming environment. The concept revolves around guiding visitors on a meditative path, leading them from the existing retreat to new spaces that encourage relaxation and community connection.

Design Configuration

The structure consists of two connected volumes that create an engaging spatial experience. The first volume is on the ground level and provides essential facilities, including male and female changing rooms and technical areas. Above it, the second volume rises 1.5 meters, housing the meditation space, often described as "floating." This arrangement elevates the area and offers impressive views, enhancing the connection to the natural surroundings.

Architectural Expression

A trapezoidal connecting volume acts as a transition space, featuring wide steps that connect the two levels. The main entrance is situated to the south, leading into a panoramic terrace that promotes social interaction among guests. This thoughtful orientation encourages people to gather, fostering community before and after their meditation sessions. The design carefully integrates indoor and outdoor elements, creating a welcoming atmosphere.

Material Considerations

Cross Laminated Timber panels are used for the walls, providing both strength and sustainability. The slabs are supported by Glulam beams and massive boards, which contribute to the building's stability and lightweight characteristics. Vertical planks cover the exterior, adding a sense of continuity with the surrounding landscape and complementing the overall peaceful aesthetic.

These material choices help maintain energy efficiency while ensuring a solid structure. A noteworthy design feature is the large glass façade of the floating meditation room, which connects the interior to the outdoors. This transparency brings natural light into the space and frames the scenic views of the valley, inviting nature inside and enhancing the overall experience of the Yoga House.
