The elevated cabin utilizes a triangular design and recycled steel structure to minimize environmental impact while providing a dedicated space for meditation in a serene forest setting.
5 key facts about this project
01
Triangular form enhances stability and wind resistance.
02
Elevated structure reduces ecological disturbance on the forest floor.
03
Modular design provides flexibility for various meditation activities.
04
Centralized equipment space separates practical functions from meditation areas.
05
Utilizes recycled steel to support sustainable construction practices.

The meditation cabin is located in a calm forest environment, designed for individuals seeking a space to reflect and engage in meditation. It promotes a connection to nature through its thoughtful design. The project focuses on principles such as symmetry and sustainability. Its core ideas are conformity, zero destruction, and manifestation, which guide how the structure relates to its surroundings while reducing its impact on the natural habitat.

Design Concept

The design responds to the specific conditions of the environment, ensuring it integrates well with the forest. The cabin features a triangular shape, which provides stability, particularly against strong winds that are common in the area. This geometric choice not only supports the structure physically but also aligns it with the natural contours of the landscape. A sloped roof effectively directs water from rainfall, which is significant in this region, allowing it to flow away without compromising the cabin's integrity.

Spatial Organization

Inside the cabin, there are three main areas: life, meditation, and equipment. This layout allows for multiple uses and accommodates various activities. Centralizing the washing and preparation functions within the equipment space keeps the more practical aspects of the cabin separate from the tranquility needed for meditation. Such organization aids in creating distinct environments for living and reflection, improving the overall user experience.

Materiality and Environmental Integration

The cabin is elevated on sustainable columns to lessen its impact on the forest floor and preserve local vegetation. This approach demonstrates a focus on environmental responsibility. The structure predominantly uses recycled steel, which provides strength as a load-bearing element. Composite wood is utilized for floors, walls, and roofs, showcasing a commitment to using sustainable materials throughout the design process.

Design Detail

Geothermal energy sources and aqua privies are included, reinforcing the cabin's focus on ecological sustainability. These features ensure that the cabin functions efficiently in its environment. They also allow users to engage fully with nature, fostering a deeper experience of meditation and reflection amid the surrounding forest.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
