5 key facts about this project
01
Mechanical parking system allows vertical vehicle storage in a limited footprint.
02
Rainwater collection tower creates an underground reservoir for sustainable water management.
03
Enhanced air circulation improves environmental conditions within the parking structure.
04
Design prioritizes pedestrian safety near dense community areas and schools.
05
Strategically addresses urban congestion in a rapidly growing metropolitan context.

The design is located in the Amman area of Jordan, where it confronts challenges such as urban congestion and limited resources. The structure takes the form of a high-rise building that integrates a mechanical parking system to make efficient use of the available space. Positioned in the heart of a busy commercial district, the design reflects the growing needs of the population while focusing on improving transportation and embracing sustainable practices.

Mechanical Parking System

A mechanical parking system serves as a focal point in the design, addressing the critical need for parking as the city faces heavier traffic during peak hours. This system arranges vehicles vertically, allowing for more parking spaces in a smaller footprint. By making parking easier and more accessible, the design directly responds to one of the main challenges for residents and visitors.

Rainwater Collection

The rainwater collection feature is vital in this design, as it serves a practical function in a region known for its limited annual rainfall. The high-rise includes a tower that captures rainwater and stores it underground, creating a large reservoir for future use. This sustainable approach not only helps manage water resources effectively but also encourages responsible usage in an area where water scarcity is a pressing concern.

Air Circulation Features

Air circulation plays a significant role in the overall design. The implementation of a pipe system enhances airflow throughout the building, providing benefits for both the parked vehicles and the environment outside. By improving ventilation, the design reduces the build-up of vehicle emissions, which contributes to a healthier atmosphere for pedestrians and surrounding areas.

Safety Considerations

The design prioritizes the safety of pedestrians, particularly given that a significant portion of the city's population is young. Located close to schools and public spaces, the building includes features aimed at reducing accidents and promoting safe interactions between vehicles and pedestrians. This reflects an awareness of the urgent need for improved traffic conditions in busy urban areas.

The overall structure combines practicality with environmental consciousness. With its various functional elements, the design aims to create an organized urban environment that meets the needs of its community while fostering a more sustainable future.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
